Book Review - You Are Not Listening - Kate Murphy (Part V)

Do you feel lonely all the time? Do you often blame yourself when bad things happen? Do you often feel like you are drifing with the crowd? People's inner voices have a tremendous influence, in part because they're actually perceived as louder. People are easily influenced by Spanky - the mean inner voice.

Live for Others and Live for Yourself

Social interaction is a complicated study. Humans are the most intelligent creatures in the world. Humans were originally designed to help each other and build a strong community. However, the original intention of human design has changed with the prosperity and development of society. When it comes to competitiveness, the dialogue between humans will no longer become easy and free.

Giver and Taker

Our world functions according to rules.   In a study on this topic, Adam Grant states that  there are three types of people in the world.  They are classified as takers, matchers and givers, respectively.   This concept is based on people’s willingness  to share. Takers only care about themselves and won’t share with others. Matchers tend to estimate the profit for themselves before sharing their resources with others.   Givers are always willing to share everything. Surprisingly , givers are the winners in the world, because they follow the rules of life most successfully.

Why are people unwilling to listen to opposing views? This is an interesting topic. A group of neuroscientists at the USC Brain and Creativity Institute in Los Angeles conducted a study looking at the brain activity of subjects when their beliefs were challenged. As a result, parts of their brains lit up, as if they were being chased by a bear.

Key to the World

Have you ever dreamed of traveling around the world? Have you ever thought about moving to other city? Our world is so big that we should spend some time to broaden our horizons. You may feel alone when you're on the road. You may be panic when faced with something uncomfortable. When it happens, we still need to smile, be positive and be calm. These are trivial things that won't bother you.

What will you do if you hear a piece of negative news from your friend? How will you react? What emotion will you express? Nowadays, people are more indifferent towards sad stories. They tend to skip the topic when people hear negative news. Instead, they love positive and successful stories.

Graham Bodie, a professor of integrated marketing communication, told us that people crave to be understood while sharing their stories. We seek true friends, not business partners. We feel lonely because we cannot share our sorrow with others or we are misunderstood.

Book Review - You Are Not Listening - Kate Murphy (Part I)

How much time do you spend listening to others? When we talk, what exactly are we listening to? Are we listening to their feelings or their stories? The author of "You're Not Listening" interviewed many experts, collected their research, and turned it into a book. It's a nice book and I even get many ideas from it. Here are several pieces of stories from the book.

Art in Life

Art is a study that exists in any form. It can be anywhere. As long as you give a meaning or a name for it, everything can be art. Speaking of the history of art, it can be traced back to a long time ago. Our ancestors kept diaries or took notes by drawing pictures or engraving them in stone, before the invention of texts. In China, texts are also derived from oracle bone inscriptions that were carved on turtle shells or stones.
